Machining

 

Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of opportunities in the field of machining.  As well as basic machining operations, supplemental components of the course will include blueprint reading, basic and finite measurement, machine and workplace maintenance, workplace safety, and career and employability skills.  In addition, students will be introduced to the design process, computer aided design, and computerized numerical control (CNC) machining.  Students will have a wide range of hands-on experience to assist them in making career choices in the ever-expanding machine tool industries.

 
Machine Technology Course Outline (First Years)

A.      Personal Shop Practices

a.       Develop safe working habits

b.      Follow shop dress code

c.       Follow shop conduct rules

d.      Select the proper tool for the job

B.      Basic Shop Maintenance

a.       Checking daily oil levels each time before running machines

b.      Check out and return tools daily from tool crib

c.       Daily machine cleaning

d.      Weekly machine cleaning

C.      Measurement and Layout

a.       Measure using rulers and scales

b.      Reading and use of a micrometer

c.       Reading and use of a vernier/dial caliper

d.      Measuring angular features

e.      Perform precision layout of part to print

f.        Check measuring tools

D.      Blueprint Reading

a.       Interpret Orthographic views

b.      Interpret print tolerances, and be able to create part within those tolerances

c.       Calculate dimensions

E.       Hand tools and their use

a.       List major hand tools and their uses

b.      Use and care of hand and power saws

c.       Use and care of files and bench vises

d.      Use and care of letter and number stamps

e.      Use and care of taps and dies for threading

F.       Operating Drill Press

a.       List the major parts of Drill Press

b.      Sharpening drill bits

c.       Mount and secure work piece

d.      Drill, Ream, Tap, and Spot-face hole on location

G.     Operation a Lathe

a.       List the major parts of a Lathe

b.      Creating and sharpening lathe tool bits, then aligning on machine

c.       Straight turn a work piece in 3 jaw chuck and between centers

d.      Machine a short taper

H.      Operation of a Knee Mill

a.       List the major parts of Mill

b.      Mount and align vise on machine

c.       Mount and secure work piece

d.      Mount and secure cutting tools

e.      Square a work piece

f.        Locate edges of a work piece using an edge finder

g.       Correct use of parallels

 

Machine Technology Course Outline (Second Years)

I.        Personal Shop Practices

a.       Continue to develop and be an example of tasks learned during first year

J.        Basic Shop Maintenance

a.       Complete understanding and continued use of tasks learned during first year

b.      Maintain and record weekly machine maintenance

c.       In charge of check out and return of tools daily in the tool crib

K.      Measurement and Layout

a.       Should have good grasp of all requirements for first years

b.      Use and care of .001 dial indicator

c.       Maintain measuring tools correctly

L.       Blueprint Reading

a.       Must be able to perform tasks learned during first year

b.      Learn how to interpret notes and weld symbols

M.    Hand tools and their use

a.       Must be familiar with all requirements from first year

b.      Help others to pick and use correct tool

N.     Operating Drill Press

a.       Must be familiar with all requirements for first years

b.      Be able to use drill press for many applications

O.     Operation a Lathe

a.       Must be familiar with all requirements from first year

b.      Align and turn part in 4 jaw chuck

c.       Align and adjust tail stock for taper then straight again

d.      Pick up and chase threads, including re-setup of threads

P.      Operation of a Knee Mill

a.       Must be familiar with all requirements from first year

b.      Bore parts in vise

c.       Mount and use turntable

d.      Know and use limits of machines for odd parts

Q.     Job process

a.       Quote job from print

b.      Plan operations and process needed

c.       Machine and record times for each part

d.      Inspect part in process

e.      Maintain and record scrap rate

f.        Interrogate quote to actual time used

g.       Prepare parts for shipping

R.      Inspection skills

a.       Inspect own work  in process

b.      Inspect and check work of first year project

c.       Maintain equipment for inspection
